Vision Screening: September 27, 2024, for students in kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, and 5th Grade Dear Parent(s) or Guardian: Your child may be given a vision screening during this school year. Before screening is conducted, state law requires parents be informed that vision screening is not a substitute for an eye examination by an eye care specialist. Vision screening may take place at any time during the school year. Every attempt is made to have student vision screening completed as soon as possible from the start of the school year. Several methods for vision screening are state approved and available for student screening. Any of the following methods may be used to screen your child: Distance vision charts, photo screening, or computerized programs. School screenings are coordinated by the school nurse who may use trained parent volunteers and school staff to assist, or may request state-approved vision screening assistance from the Lions Sight Foundation, Friends for Sight, or the Utah Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired. You will receive a referral letter if your child fails the screening. However, even if your child passed, it is important that your child see an eye care specialist once a year. School vision screening does not evaluate eye health and cannot uncover all important vision problems or prescribe treatment. Vision referral information, on children age 8 and under, will be reported to the Utah State Division for the Blind and Visually Impaired as stated in Utah Law 53A-11-203. Because academic learning is 80% visual, and visual problems are best detected and treated early, a comprehensive eye and vision examination is recommended. Healthy eyes and good vision are essential for success in school. Please provide the school with written notification if you do not want your child to participate in the screening program. If you have questions or would like to volunteer to assist with vision screenings, please contact Julia Hansen, school nurse at 801-830-0236. Sincerely, Julia Hansen, MS, BSN, RN Elementary School Nurse

https://secure.smore.com/n/mupqc Hello Cook Families! After what seems like the shortest summer in history, we're very excited to welcome our Cook Cougars back for the 2024-25 school year. Class lists are finalized, the school has a fresh new look, and our team has worked hard to create a positive learning environment for your children. A newsletter similar to the one linked above will be distributed by email and social media each weekend. This is our main communication tool with parents. There is a translation feature at the top of the newsletter for our friends who speak other languages. We look forward to seeing you all again at our Back-to-School Open House on Wednesday from 5-6:30pm. Until then, stay cool and enjoy your last few days of summer. Scott Hughes

Let's get to know Lisa Stewart and welcome her to Cook Elementary! She will be our fine arts specialist. I am a lover of the arts! I have 5 children and I am a grandma of two promising little artists. I have taught art both privately and publicly. I have seen the difference that integrating with art makes in learning mastery, time and time again. I have taken jewelry making, sculpting, casting, stained glass, pottery, drawing, painting, lettering, glass blowing, weaving, culinary arts, book making, and even underwater basket weaving classes and thoroughly enjoyed each one, but what I really enjoy and live for is watching children be creative. I am super excited to join the wonderful team and to work with all of the promising artists of Cook Elementary.

Let's get to know Brooke Pendleton and welcome her to Cook Elementary! I am Brooke Pendleton and I am the new Administrative Intern. I am so excited to be a part of the Cook team. A little bit about me.... I have 3 wonderful children (16G, 13G, 10B). They run my world and are all heavily involved in athletics. I have lived in Syracuse for the last 3 years, and in Layton before that. I grew up in Layton and graduated from Layton High School. Last year I was the intern at Columbia and Valley View Elementary. Before I became an intern I taught SPED for 15 years at both the elementary and Jr. High levels. For fun, I enjoy my kids sporting events, being their Uber driver and traveling when I can!
